"Our family works with New Vistas Early Childhood Program. Our two year-old son, Brian, has hemiplegina a type of cerebral palsy that typically results from a stroke in pregnancy or early infancy. His motor skills were impaired on his right side as a result of the stroke, in much the same way that an elderly person experiences debilitations from a stroke.
In contrast to elderly patients, the brain of a young child is developing at a very rapid rate, implying that therapies are likely to be particularly effective in helping the patient realize their full potential. My husband’s employer transferred him from Los Angeles in June of 2006. While the Santa Fe community has a great deal to offer, I was reticent about moving our son from a metropolis that is a medical powerhouse to a smaller community.
To my relief and Brian’s benefit, New Vistas has not only helped us gain access to outstanding standard therapies—physical and occupational therapies as well as music class and referrals to other opportunities, such as swimming and therapeutic riding—but they also have provided us with the opportunity to be “early adopters” of a cutting-edge therapy, which is only beginning to be offered around the country. I am referring to Constraint-induced Movement Therapy or CIMT."

The New Vistas Adult Services Program operates within the Independent Living Philosophy which holds that “disability is a natural part of the human experience and in no way diminishes the right of individuals to: live independently; enjoy self-determination; make choices; contribute to society; pursue meaningful careers; and enjoy full inclusion and integration into the economic, political, social, cultural and educational mainstream of American society.”
